actually, that was one of the rare things the Academy got right Bill Murray just played, well, Bill Murray, charming funny but not a lot of gravitas. Sean Penn is obviously a far better actor and deserved the Oscar, as well as the other award he got for his brilliant role in Msytic River. But the bigger point is that the Oscars are usually a joke, as the umteen awards for a kisd movie proves Martin Scorsese Robert Altman Stanley Kubrick nevr won best Director even, so how seriously can you take it?

It would be interesting to know what Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson were expecting Sofia Coppola to say. They were both so intensely on edge when she went up to accept her award, it seemed like she might be planning to tell the academy how full of **** it is. Your comments are well taken, but I don't really get the sexual malevolence you're exhibiting here. How does one "ball like a little girl"?

The one place where they clearly did not let me down was for Tim Robbins to receive best supporting actor. That was my favorite role for the year. Sean Penn played his usual hood, which he did more movingly in Dead Man, for which he should have received it. Tom Cruise surely should have received one for born on the fourth. (The list of the snubbed is so long.) I have previously hated the Academy for being such whores, though they seem to have begun to turn it around.
