A Sounds Eclectic Evening is more than a concert. Ever since KCRW started bringing its eclectic format to a live arena six years ago, ASEE has served as a launching pad for the station’s new musical discoveries and indie favorites. And it’s a place where chart toppers like Coldplay, Death Cab for Cutie and Norah Jones perform special sets to thank the station for its support of their music and to return the favor.
In an evening known as much for its headline acts as for its surprise guests -- ranging in the past from Franz Ferdinand to Beck -- Music Director Nic Harcourt has conceived a stellar line up for this year’s show. Indie rock gods The Shins, UK sensation Lily Allen, world music dynamos Rodrigo y Gabriela, electronica globetrotters the Pinker Tones and the newest and hottest local bands sweeping the national music scene, Cold War Kids and Bitter: Sweet, have all signed on to play.
This year, the annual fundraising concert will do more than bring KCRW-supported artists directly to the fans – it will help preserve KCRW’s massive library of music for years to come. KCRW (89.9 FM and KCRW.com) has been at the forefront of the changing media industry for more than a decade. Now the station is embarking on a mission to digitize its massive collection of CDs and vinyl EPs, with more than 60,000 recordings, built up over three decades. Since KCRW does not only focus on radio hits, the digital collection will be vast and eclectic, housing entire albums, not just the most-played tracks. Also, some of the jazz and classical albums in KCRW’s library will never be digitized by their labels, so the station will be saving them from obscurity. Funds from this year’s A Sounds Eclectic Evening will support this effort.
In addition, KCRW continues to stream programming online, offering free podcasts, free music downloads and 11 years of program archives. The station also creates and syndicates original KCRW.com online content to other radio stations.
KCRW’s tastemaker status is undeniable. No longer a niche public radio station known only to music insiders, KCRW has become an internationally renowned source for breaking music, free-form radio and deejays who are counted among the industry’s trendsetters and tastemakers.
Mitchell Frank of Spaceland Productions and Liz MacDonald, KCRW’s Director of Events/Music Promotion, have produced A Sounds Eclectic Evening for the past six years.
Tickets go on sale to the general public on Tuesday, February 27 through all Ticketmaster retail outlets, by phone at 213-480-3232, 714-740-2000, 805-583-8700, 619-220-TIXS, online at www.ticketmaster.com, or in person at the Gibson Amphitheatre Box Office. For 24 Hour Info Call: (818) 622-4440.
