(Sumerian Records)

Halloween may be over for the masses, but for those of us who wish it went on year round, for those Gothic cretins who would live in A Nightmare Before Christmas, there is The Greatest Show Unearthed, a delectably devious menagerie of musical macabre. The album recalls the bestest elements of Poe, Lovecraft, The Damned and more. Creature Feature is more than a holiday novelty act, they are a dexterous Greek Chorus with minds and musical skills that operate as an encyclopedic catalog of everything wild, weird, ghastly and enervating.

The eponymous first track is the perfect anthem of carnival offerings, coaxing the listener into cavorting madly and clawing at the air for the first drop of blood or slippery integument. Every track hence is equally energetic and chock full of horror hellaciousness, harkening, dear stranger, to every recess of rot, rampage and grotesquerie known to Rubekind.

Whether it’s a viral epidemic, a waking burial or a good body snatching, The Greatest Show Unearthed is unrelenting and irresistibly awesome. Who knew such horrible things would sound so bloody wonderful?—Bob Freville
