Daft Punk ---- Discovery
When you hear their pounding music you’ll recognize it, but if you saw Daft Punk in person you’d never know. They make their public appearances dressed as robots.
When you hear their pounding music you’ll recognize it, but if you saw Daft Punk in person you’d never know. They make their public appearances dressed as robots. Their music is a feverish futru-retro fusion. They’re pioneers of a 21st Century disco-house recipe. At the same time most of their music is reminiscent of 80’s synthesizer tracks a la Kraftwerk, Yaz, Depeche Mode, Joy Division and at times the beats even conjure memories of Shalimar and Lisa-Lisa and the Cult Jam. These synthesizer sounds are coupled with four-on-the-floor house beats…
Ever since their first smash "Around the World" hit the clubs in late ’96 Daft Punk has kept party people jumpin’. Now the US is really embracing them… They’ve been on the covers of fresh mags like URB, THE FACE and several other edgy graphic music magazines… The album has a brilliant blend of instrumental tracks with vocal joints as well. The tempo switches from every track. They have a repertoire of sounds from blazing guitar solos to church bells to a soft piano.
Their use of the vocoder to emphasize the vocals further reinforces the futuristic feel…At the same time the robotic voices over the jam are a throwback to the days of breakdancing tracks like "No Parking on the dance floor." Veteran house singer Romanthony’s familiar voice has helped "One More Time" become a worldwide club sensation. The track refashions Kool and the Gang’s "Celebration," into a house jam. The electronic voice on "Digital Love" is reminiscent of the early 80’s smash by the Buggles "Video Killed the Radio Star."
After their double platinum 1997 debut Homework, there has been much anticipation for more from these technophiles. Daft Punk along with St. Germain have spearheaded a movement of French electronica now flourishing with acts such as Dimitri From Paris. In these days of melting genres, Daft Punk have blended the old and new to create a product that can only be labeled progressive music.
