Underground Poet of the month - Ratpack Slim
Ratpack Slim, nobody writes more poems than him.
Slim is one of the hardest working poets in Los Angeles. He knows that every morning contains an explosion & the landmine is him. He channels this energy to explore life's extremes & everything in between. His deft wordplay is coupled with his joy of life to produce poems that offer hope while takin' you on one helluva a musical ride. Epic joints every time. Check these lines from his piece "New Vibes."
the bbbeats are bbbumpin
necks are craning to scope
heads are straining to scope
emcees in training are dope and we’re all
waving our notebooks and grabbing our pens
giving hugs and pounds to all of our friends
nice to feel this presence again
His background of drawing comics & rhyme writing fuses perfectly producing vivid pictures whether you're reading his work or hearing it. Slim has a Masters Degree in Creative Writing & manages a record shop.. He jumped into the spoken word game a decade after he useta rock rhymes in the Midwest.. Back in the early '90's Slim rapped while he was in college.. Doin' shows & whatnot.. Now he rocks harder then ever.. Have you heard "Master PoP MoneY?"
Ratpack SliM came to LA in the mid '90's.. Slim's done acting, singing & every type of writing.. Writing screenplays, short stories, battle rhymes & epic poems.. These days he's found his home rockin' poems on microphones.. He writes poems every night & if you call him he just might read one to you.. Slim's in heaven with a six-pack & six discs in the CD player.. Perenially writin' poems till the newspaper comes.. Find him at Da' Poetry Lounge, Green or one of Rachel's jams.. he also did one of his poems on a BET show...
Slim's work cuts across the cross-section of the population. Literary but still gritty. Rhythmic & relentless, his verses are like a freight train. He explains himself:
this verse is my vice
and it helps keep me level or
helps keep me next level so
i board my elevator and head for the top
but there’s no elevator music in my elevator
there’s just elevating music in my elevator
and if u review the security camera in there
u’ll see me dancin and swayin..
Slim's verses will have you movin'. MovE!
Rarely can you read a poet with such fervor.
Slim's "love revolution has barely begun to be written."

doesn't follow anyone else's style...and he's a hell of a nice guy. If I could start a new world with someone's DNA..
