I Spit On Eli Roth - dvd review

Devil Snively's 15-minute horror-comedy short has got balls. Pink ones.

Self-proclaimed "directrix" Devi Snively (Meat Is Murder, Death In Charge) scores a bloody bulls-eye with her self-referential horror short I Spit on Eli Roth. The colorful cartoonish opening credit is just one of the fun things about this little flick.

Taking aim at a chauvanistic Gorywood that purports to being too scary for chicks and the eponymous Eli Roth (Cabin Fever, Hostel), whose films generally feature the same vacuous slut characters, Snively's 'I Spit On...' dexterously lampoons the denigration of a genre that once was, and obviously still can be, a fertile mining ground for intelligent thought, inventive kills, acerbic wit and social commentary, things that Eli Roth is charged with lacking in his movies.

Lest you think Snively and Company are being pretentious or exclusive in their indictment consider the fact that, in addition to poking fun at "the lowest common denominator," they also caricature the militant feminist auteur with her blowhorn, pig tails and pink, pink pinks.

I Spit On Eli Roth is the best kind of short film--witty, audacious and with hell-for-leather pacing. At fifteen minutes it says more than most Hollywood "thrillers" do in ninety plus.
